Via Francigena III Hike March 20-22 2023

The Via Francigena (Road that comes from France) or in medieval times Via Roma Francigena ( the road to Rome from France) was an important road and pilgrimage route for those wishing to visit the holy land and tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul.

It is a 1,000-year-old route and 1,056 Miles (1,700 km) long and takes about 98 days to walk to whole route which starts at the Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, England goes through France, Switzerland, to Rome and finally Apulia where there were ports of embarkation for the Holy Land.

In Italy, the Via Francigena crosses 6 Italian regions: Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio.

This is the third leg of our ultimate destination of Rome

⛰DETAILED ITINERARY AND COSTS⛰

✅Day 1: Monday March 20th 2023  Walk from Radiocofani to Proceno

 🅿️Meeting point: 8:30 am Sharp in Chianciano Terme train station.  Private driver to pick us up to bring us to Radiocofani.

( Some poeple stay in a little hotel the night before or there is a 6:40 am train from Firenze SMN that arrives at 8:29am)  

❓Description: We leave Tuscany and Radicofani behind us to descend first to Ponte al Rigo and then climb back up to the ancient village of Proceno. We are in the province of Viterbo: all around us are wide open spaces. The landscape is just unbelievable! Tonight we will stay in the beautiful Proceno Castle, hosted by Signora Cecilia who will guide us through her castle and through the incredible history of her family. A delicate and unique experience worth the entire trip!

✅Day 2: Tuesday March 22, 2023: Walk from Proceno to Aquapendente to Bolsena 

🅿️Meeting point: 9:00am depart time from Castello di Proceno

❓Description: Our second day of walking cannot fail to include a stop in Acquapendente: itself a place of devotion, the crypt of the Cathedral contains the blood-stained stones of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a very important relic that made this place the substitute destination for pilgrims who could not travel to Rome or, much less, Jerusalem.After a short transfer to avoid a long urban stretch, we resume walking from San Lorenzo Nuovo to descend and conclude our adventure on the beautiful shores of Lake Bolsena.

✅Day 3 Wednesday March 22, 2023: Walk from Bolsena to Montefiascone

🅿️Meeting Point: 9:00 Hotel Platani

❓Description:Bolsena is indeed very beautiful and rich in history and stories. We will take the time to visit the village, its alleys and its many treasures. Perhaps the most important for pilgrims is the Basilica of Santa Cristina with its Catacombs and the relics of the famous Miracle of Bolsena. We set off for Montefiascone, a route through forests and truly impressive lake views. In Montefiascone we are welcomed by the wonderful church of San Flaviano, rich in frescoes and where rests Bishop Johannes Defuk, who gave his name to the wine Est! Est!! Est!!!
