Day 1: Monday April 8th  2024 Walk from VITERBO to

VETRALLA

Meeting point: 9:30 am Sharp in Viterbo INFO POINT TOURIST OFFICE OF

VIERBO( PIAZZA MARTIRI D’UNGHERIA)

Distance: 18km 

Total climb: +260mt/-260mt

Approx. actual walking time: 6 Hours

Terrain: mixed terrain: alternating stretches of dirt roads, forest paths, crossings of fields and urban parts in asphalt.

Level: Moderate

We will start our day with a short introduction about Vierbo. We leave Viterbo and the splendid quarter of San Pellegrino. The cathedral and the Palace of the Popes was where various synods were held for 70 years and where the pontiff sought refreshment from the Roman summer heat and its tumultuous past. As we exit the Etruscan streets, we begin to cross the extensive hazel groves of the Viterbo area to Vetralla.

We stay in the village of Vetralla arriving as we descent the Crimini Mountains from the western slope. Vetralla is famous for its porcini mushrooms, so maybe we can get a nice treat for dinner.

Day 2: Tuesday April 9, 2024: Walk   from Vetralla-Capranica-

Sutri

Meeting point: 8:30am depart time from Hotel Antica Locanda

Description:

Distance: 27KM (You will have an option here: to make it shorter: We arrive in Capranica for a drink/ coffee. From there you can either 1) walk about 2 more hours to Sutri or 2) get a regular bus to Sutri ( becomes a 20 km day)

You DO NOT have to decide now. You can decide on the day and see how you feel.

Total climb: +370/-300

Approx. actual walking time: 8 Hours ( or 6)

Terrain: Mixed: alternating stretches of dirt roads, forest paths, crossings of fields and urban parts, in asphalt.

LA Accommodation: Here we will stay at the bottom of the village in Sutri. We will have to split up in B&B’s.

Day 3 Wednesday April 10, 2024 :   Walk from Sutri-Monterosi-

Campagnano

Meeting Point: TBD

Description: We have decided to cut a 9km section via regular bus from this stretch. It’s on asphalt and not fun. BUT instead, we will have a tour of the Mitreo and Amphitheatre in the morning. As we approach urban Rome, the views are not what they were when we started in Tuscany. This is a great opportunity as Sutri is probably one of the most beautiful and interesting villages for this leg.

Bus to from Sutri-Monterosi

Monterosi is on the foothills of the Sibillini Mountains: we leave from here, traveling along part of the ancient Via Amerina, towards the waterfalls of Monte Gelato:, along the Treja River. Frequented since prehistoric times, the site preserves traces of multiple settlements that have succeeded one another over time: from the remains of a Roman villa from the first century B.C., to the agricultural settlement of the eighth century A.D. to the nineteenth-century watermill that remained in use until the 1960s. It is a popular place for movie script writers and commercials. In the evening we arrive in Campagnano di Roma-we really are at the gates of the Eternal City!

Day 4 Thursday April 11, 2024 :   Walk from CAMPAGNANO -

FORMELLO + MONTE MARIO -   SAN PIETRO ROMA

Meeting Point: Hotel Benigni

Description:We decided to group two stage of the Francigena into one. Walking into cities is not the best thing for our tired legs and walking with cars and industrial complexes and houses, not too fun. We selected the most enjoyable and pleasant parts to arrive in Rome as much as possible in beauty. From Campagnano we arrive in beautiful Formello ( 10 km)passing by the Madonna del Sorbo, a very evocative place of popular devotion.

A car transfer from Formello to the Monte Mario park will allow us to skip some not so nice looking areas. From the park we have an incredible view of Rome! Slowly we descend to St. Peter's, where we will collect our well-deserved "testimonium" (Monte Mario park to Rome

7.5KM)

Transfer Fornello to Monte Mario: About 30 min via car

Distance: 17.5km

Total climb: +200/-300 mt

Approx. actual walking time: 5 ½ hours

Terrain: Mixed: alternating stretches of dirt roads, urban parts, in asphalt. Level: Moderate

Hike + transfer: 125 Euro

Daily for each day is 25 euro per day.

On the last day In Rome ,Luggage will be at  Deposito Bagagli davanti alla Stazione Termini where you have until 7pm to pick it up.
